Electricity: rates, bills and running costs

Residential electricity averaged 18.3¢ per kWh across the U.S. in July 2026, but the state you live in moves that a long way: from 12.7¢ in Louisiana to 48.0¢ in Hawaii.

Why the same appliance costs different amounts

A kilowatt-hour is the same amount of energy everywhere, so the cost of running something comes down to two numbers: how many kilowatt-hours it uses and what your utility charges for each one. The first depends on the appliance and how long it runs. The second depends on where you live, and it is the one most calculators guess at with a national average.

The pages here start from your state's actual average residential price, as reported to the U.S. Energy Information Administration by utilities. Your own rate can still differ: utilities within a state charge different prices, many bills add fixed monthly charges, and some plans price electricity by time of day. Where the calculators ask for a rate, the rate on your bill always beats the state average.
